Brunch. It’s one of my favorite activities to participate in. Especially in the summer. On a patio. With a brunch drink in hand. In my case, it’s usually three drinks; water {for hydration}, coffee {because I have a 1.5 year old wild child}, and a bloody mary, {because its salty, delicious, and has olives. And vodka}. Now in the BBD household, brunch is actually a point of contention among us.
Here’s the breakdown:
- Shelley and I would brunch all day, everyday.
- Aaron is in for any place that serves up migas or huevos rancheros {can’t take the Texas out of the guy}.
- And then there is Matt. Matt has a bone to pick with brunch mainly because brunch doesn’t have an exact time. Because “brunch time” can be fluid, for instance a “closer to breakfast 10am brunch for the early birds, old people and people with young children” or the “just rolled out of bed, night owl, college and twenty-something crowd, better-make-it-before-brunch-ends 1:30 pm brunch”. This leaves Matt in limbo. Do you eat before you go to brunch and not be hungry when you arrive, therefore missing out on breakfast pizza? Which would be a sad story. Or do you endure a growling stomach and wait to eat until brunch in order to properly enjoy the brunch offerings? He finds this to be such a conundrum.
Despite his brunch quandary, we’ll make a convert of him yet! Here’s the low down on the places we dig.
Happy brunching!

Masa
Located at 439 Tremont Street in Boston’s very tasty South End neighborhood, Masa has become our go to eatery for “early brunch” because of their Brunch Fiesta. This two course brunch special is perfect and also comes in at $8. Ridiculous anywhere, but especially in Boston. That my friends, is winning. Don’t worry though — you can bump your bill back up with the delicious and spicy Bloody Mary’s or what they call the Bloody Masa.
There is also a complimentary basket of fresh breads accompanied by maple butter and other delicious spreads. Don’t forego the bread basket!
Pavement Coffeehouse
The best latte (in Jenna’s opinion as a latte addict) and the hands-down most delicious bagel sandwich in the city. Make sure to order a Sunrise on an everything bagel with bacon and you’ll be set until dinner. We frequent the Newbury St. location most often, but be warned, the line can be long. If you want to step up your drink choice, try an Iced Spanish Latte for a little treat.
Tremont 647
Another South End brunch staple is the pajama party that happens every Saturday & Sunday over at 647 Tremont Street. Its hard to chose between their savory and sweet brunch options like Lemon Ricotta French Toast or the Fried Chicken Benedict. But which ever you chose, you must try the homemade poptarts with seasonal fruit filling. They are even better than the poptarts of your childhood. Good service and stand out brunch drinks makes this a fun and relaxed spot.
Mike & Patty’s
First off, it is teeny tiny. The inside of the corner shop seats approximately 6 people, if that. In fact, we’ve never even eaten inside. Which is fine because Bay Village happens to have several lovely parks and a quick walk will land you in the
Public Garden or the
Boston Common. When we have the pleasure of hosting guests in town, Mike & Patty’s is the first stop on Saturday morning before we take on the city. This eating experience is definitely worth the effort finding
Bay Village {which is tricky} sometimes takes. It is also worth the wait that the shop is notorious for.
