Custom Maple Countertop South Shore Massachusetts

Where the Work Takes Us

How one client created a dedicated home office space with the help of some creamy maple hardwood.

By Jill Butterworth

The home office has become a domestic staple since the pandemic. A dedicated space for work in a place where your laundry and comfort zones are just a few steps away are important for productivity.

Renate Devin, founder of The Boston School of Etiquette, had one more room to renovate in her seaside Hull home and wanted it to be a space to work. She opted for a 12-foot maple desk against a textured sea-green wall. The space off the kitchen is well-lit, complemented with light-colored furniture, and outside the window, views of Boston Harbor.

Maple, her choice of wood after a consult with Matt, features a fine, uniform grain with creamy white, tan, and light brown tones. A warm patina will develop over time only adding more character, while also being a strong, durable hardwood.

When we asked her why she chose BirchBarn, she offered the words that small businesses live to hear. "I just really like to support small, local businesses," said Devin, who was the kindest host a few weeks back, offering us tea and props as we photographed the desk Matt constructed for her last year. Not surprising given her line of business.
