What Makes a Great BBQ Cutting Board?

What Makes a Great BBQ Cutting Board?

Time to lean into the slower part of the summer. Let's start in the backyard. Here's our best takes for the boards made for gathering around under a canopy of sunshine or stars.

Whether you're tending the smoker for twelve hours or firing up the grill for a weeknight cookout, each meal deserves a board that can handle the job and look good on the table.

Our River Rock Farm and Circle Walnut End-Grain Cutting Boards were designed with BBQ in mind. Built for carving brisket, slicing steak, or serving a feast from the grill, these are the boards you'll reach for all summer long.

"You can't serve great BBQ on a paper plate," says BirchBarn founder and head woodworker Matt Swanson. "These boards are the workhorses of our collection. They're built to handle carving and slicing, but I also chose hardwoods that look just as good on the table as they perform in the kitchen."

The River Rock Farm is a colorful, nearly two-inch-thick edge-grain cutting board designed with BBQ enthusiasts in mind. One side features a smooth surface for everyday prep, while the flip side showcases our exclusive Brisket Pattern.

Inspired by the texture of rough-sawn lumber, the Brisket Pattern features a series of irregular ridges that gently elevate sliced brisket, steak, or ribs, allowing the meat to rest in its own flavorful juices instead of sitting in them. It's a functional detail that also creates a fun presentation when it's time to serve.

While the River Rock Farm is great for BBQ, the Circle Walnut End-Grain Cutting Board is the one that comes out for steak nights. This butcher block cutting board also has the brisket pattern on one side to serve meat, but the end-grain makes it a terrific chopping companion.
